Just read that author Barbara Park, best known for all her hilarious Junie B. Jones books, died on Friday. So I just have to write a quick thank you to her for the laughs she’s provided me over the years, since I first discovered her books with my oldest daughter, who’s now 17. “My goose is cooked” still rings in my ears, and the hilarious dog-shearing scene from Junie B. Jones Is a Beauty-Shop Guy is just one of the memories I have of laughing out loud while reading out loud to two of my girls.
I was just talking to my first-grader’s teacher for our parent-teacher conference on Friday about some book options for this youngest daughter and remarking that for her, Junie B. might not be the best idea: it might give her too many ideas, whereas I never thought that about the others…. We’ll see. Regardless, I love Junie B. Her antics crack me up. I’m sure Park will be making people laugh in the next life now.
